Ajmal pulls out of Worcestershire contract

Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has been forced to withdraw from his contract as Worcestershire’s second overseas player for this season’s Friends Life t20 competition.

Ajmal’s return to New Road was always shrouded in doubt because of Pakistan’s fluid international schedule.

Confirmation that he would not be able to fulfil his contractual commitments to Worcestershire after Pakistan firmed up a tour to Sri Lanka which clashes with the county Twenty20 Cup competition.

“Losing a player of Saeed’s quality is a big disappointment. However, we are extremely active in finding a replacement for the t20,” said Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes.

Ajmal had a brief but successful stint with Worcestershire last season and was keen to return to New Road provided his international commitments permitted.

Apart from taking important wickets Ajmal also encouraged fellow off-spinner Moeen Ali to develop a ‘doosra’.

Ajmal used his own ‘doosra’ to deadly effect during the winter to spin England to a 3-0 Test series defeat in the United Arab Emirates.
