Northamptonshire captain Andrew Hall has been ruled out of the County Championship opener against Derbyshire at Derby on April 5-8.
The former South Africa all-rounder broke down with a calf injury in last week’s inter-club practice match at Wantage Road after he had bowled just five balls.
Northamptonshire hoped that Hall might be fit to face Derbyshire after a week’s rest but he has been ruled out of the trip to the Racecourse Ground. Batsman David Sales will captain Northamptonshire in Hall’s absence.
“We are looking to get Andrew back into competitive action as soon as possible. We will continue to monitor his progress ahead of our County Championship match against Kent next week,” said Northamptonshire head coach David Capel.
Hall’s injury is the second blow suffered by Northamptonshire in pre-season. Last week former Durham pace bowler Luke Evans underwent surgery on a bulging disc in his back.
Evans, who missed most of the first half of last season with a back problem, is expected to miss the first two months of the new season.
