Back injuries a worry for both Buck and Jefferson

Leicestershire will be without England Lions seamer Nathan Buck and opening batsman Will Jefferson for the County Championship opener against Glamorgan at Grace Road, starting on April 5.

Both travelled to Barbados for Leicestershire’s pre-season tour last month with back injuries and were sent home to seek specialist advice after their injuries failed to improve.

Buck, who was referred to the ECB’s medical experts because of his involvement in the England Lions’ winter schedule, is expected to be out of action until the end of April.

But Leicestershire do not yet know how long Jefferson will be sidelined for. The former Nottinghamshire and Essex batsman has suffered a series of career-stalling injuries in recent years and he will make another visit to a specialist later this week in an attempt to get to the root of his back problem.

Jefferson’s absence is likely to mean that former Durham University batsman Greg Smith will be promoted to open the batting with Matt Boyce against Glamorgan.

Former West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan will make his Leicestershire debut this week having arrived from the Caribbean on March 31.

Captain Matthew Hoggard has recovered from the shoulder operation he underwent during the winter after he was injured fielding in the Champions League in India.

Batsman Josh Cobb has also recovered from having a cyst removed from his left knee, a problem that prevented him from playing in the new Bangladesh Premier League earlier this year.
