After both had endured a frustrating time with niggling injuries, Alex Hales and Chris Read made the most of their opportunity to score a few runs as Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire wound down their Barbados tours with a two-day friendly at Windward Cricket Club.
Hales, who’d missed all four of the previous matches with a troublesome knee, made a sparkling 60 from just 51 deliveries. Making up for lost time, he pulled Keith Barker for a huge six in the first over of the contest.
Read, the Notts skipper, had been forced to sit out the semi-final defeat to Yorkshire in the T20 competition with a slight calf strain but he too was quickly about his business, compiling 82 from 85 balls, with four maximums to add to his seven boundaries.
His departure allowed Steven Mullaney a free rein to increase the tempo and the 25-year old became the third batsman to pass fifty, accelerating to an unbeaten 76 at the time of Read’s declaration on 279 for 5.
Notts arrive home from Barbados on March 27, five days before their opening first-class fixture of the season against Loughborough UCCE at Trent Bridge, starting on Sunday April 1.
