All-rounder Richard Pyrah will miss Yorkshire’s pre-season trip to Barbados because his partner, Lucinda, is expecting twins.
The imminent arrival has persuaded Pyrah to stay behind when the 18-man squad depart on Monday March 12, with the only other absentees being overseas signing Phil Jaques and Tim Bresnan.
Bresnan is in the England squad for Sri Lanka and his availability for Yorkshire this summer could have a bearing on whether Pyrah has the chance to continue his development as a four-day player.
Now 29, he was seen very much as a one-day player until last season, when Bresnan’s frequent absences allowed the Huddersfield-born medium pacer to appear in 11 County Championship games.
He cemented his place early in the season, scoring 87 in the second match against Durham at Headingley and taking five for 58 in the next game against Nottinghamshire.
Pyrah’s maiden Championship century came in extraordinary circumstances as Yorkshire were 45 for eight at home to Lancashire when Ryan Sidebottom joined Pyrah, who proceeded to reach three figures off 91 balls.
He was finally helped to his hundred by Bresnan, batting at 11 because of his delayed arrival after being released from England duty.
Another batsman who made his maiden Championship century late last season, left-hander Gary Ballance, has enjoyed another prolific winter in his native Zimbabwe.
He is in the squad for Barbados, along with 20-year-old left-arm spinner Gurman Randhawa, who has played for England Under 19s and is seen as the replacement for the departed David Wainwright.
With new first team coach Jason Gillespie on hand to help make up the numbers, if necessary, Yorkshire will stage a two-day inter-squad match before taking on Nottinghamshire in a 40-over contest at Foursquare CC on March 19.
They then start a Twenty20 tournament at the Kensington Oval the following day by facing Derbyshire, with Hampshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire also involved, plus local sides.
Yorkshire will conclude the trip with a two-day game against Derbyshire on March 24-25. On their return they have a two-day friendly against Durham at Chester-le-Street on April 1 and 2.
