Warwickshire have appointed Gareth Roberts as their new commercial director to replace James McLaughlin who will take up a new job as chief executive of the charity Cure Leukaemia at the end of the month.
Roberts is a friend of Warwickshire chief executive Colin Povey having worked under him as director of sponsorship and media relations at Carlsberg UK.
“Gareth has worked with some large brands across a number of sports over several years. In particular his experience in sales and sponsorship areas is extensive,” said Povey, a former chief executive of Carlsberg UK.
“He has worked closely with a variety of sports governing bodies and experienced large global tournaments from a client’s perspective, all of which should serve him well for the role here at Edgbaston. He joins us at a good time with a clear schedule of Major Matches confirmed for the coming years and with the ground redevelopment having been completed.”
More recently Roberts has worked as chief executive of the Leicestershire and Rutland Football Association, having previously held a temporary role as sponsorship director of Wycombe Wanderers football club and London Wasps rugby club, who groundshare at Adams Park.
Roberts is expected to take up his new job at Edgbaston in May and he will join Warwickshire at a particularly tough time.
Warwickshire host the third Test against the West Indies at Edgbaston in early June but there will be no Test cricket at the ground in 2013 or 2014 when India and Australia visit.
