The absence of several players because of international commitments has opened the way for Sussex’s Twenty20 greenhorns to get a chance to impress in the Caribbean next month.
The Sharks have named a 14-man squad for the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament which includes four players who have yet to figure in the format for the county – Will Adkin, Jimmy Anyon, Amjad Khan and Matt Machan – while leg spinner Will Beer didn’t make an appearance last summer.
Matt Prior, Murray Goodwin, Monty Panesar and Ed Joyce are among the high-profile absentees while Lewis Hatchett is staying in Australia, where he has been playing club cricket during the winter.
Beer and Machan are returning after playing Down Under while Kirk Wernars and Naveed Arif have been competing in South Africa and Pakistan respectively.
Coach Mark Robinson said: “For the less experienced players to play alongside some more senior colleagues will not only be good for them but also allow us to see how well they are developing, and we’re looking forward to the opportunity.”
Sussex open their campaign in Antigua on January 10 against Netherlands and then face Jamaica (Jan 12), Combined Campuses & Colleges (Jan 14) before moving to Barbados to complete their Zone B fixtures on January 18 against the island.
Squad: Adkin, Amjad Khan, Anyon, Beer, Gatting, Naveed Arif, Hodd, Liddle, Machan, Nash, Werners, Yardy (capt).
