England one-day international all-rounder Chris Woakes is set to return to training with Warwickshire early next month after he was forced to return early from the recent series in India with a thigh strain.
Woakes, who also missed a month in the middle of last season because of sore shins, has had little opportunity to rest for more than two years but Warwickshire’s director of cricket Ashley Giles hopes that his recent enforced break will benefit him in the long term.
“Chris has played a lot of cricket over the last three years, so we want to ensure that he has a sufficient break from all activity before he starts bowling again,” Giles said.
“He recovered quickly from the thigh strain that he picked up in India, but having the next few weeks away will ensure that his body is fresh and he’s ready to join the rest of the squad in pre-season training in December.”
Woakes was not selected for England’s first two one-day internationals in India and he missed the last three after he sustained the thigh injury in training and was forced to fly home.
