New contract extends Middlebrook’s Northants career

Northamptonshire off-spinner James Middlebrook has signed a new two-year contract which will keep him at Wantage Road until the end of 2013.

The 34-year-old Yorkshireman faced an uncertain future in first-class cricket when he was released by Essex two years ago but the move to Northamptonshire, on an initial one-year deal, has rejuvenated Middlebrook’s career.

Last season he took 43 wickets and scored 644 runs, including three centuries, in another bold attempt by Northants to win County Championship promotion.

Middlebrook was voted Northamptonshire’s Supporters Club Player of the Year and also Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph Media Player of the Year. He was also awarded his county cap in August.

“I really enjoyed this past year, with both bat and ball. Thanks to my form, I have been able to secure this contract extension and I am very pleased to have the opportunity to extend my stay with Northants,” Middlebrook said.

“We have a good mix of experience and youth here at the County Ground, and it’s nice to see a few younger players like Jack Brooks and Alex Wakely get recognised in the England Performance squads. Hopefully we can continue to play exciting cricket and win some trophies.”
