Injury forces Meschede to quit Champions League

Craig Meschede has been forced to quit Somerset’s Champions League squad because of injury.

The young all-rounder is returning home due to a continuing problem with shin splints. It was considered by medical staff in India that the time for recovery would be too long to participate further in the competition.

Lewis Gregory, who was due to step down when Jos Buttler and Craig Kieswetter joined the squad in India, following their England Twenty20 commitments, will now remain for the rest of the Champions League.

Like Meschede, Gregory is a capable batsman and seam bowler so the injury is unlikely to have a major effect on Somerset’s hopes of reaching the Champions League semi-finals.

Unbeaten in the tournament so far, Alfonso Thomas and his team play their second Group B game of the competition proper against South Australian Redbacks at Bangalore on Saturday October 1.
