Eng v Ind live: Start delayed by rain; 2nd ODI, Rose Bowl, Southampton

Rain won the day at the Riverside, Chester-le-Street on Sunday when the 1st ODI between England and India was abandoned – and it was winning again at the other end of the country on Tuesday as bad weather prevented a prompt start to the second instalment of the five-match series.

Undeterred by steady drizzle, spectators began to take their places inside Hampshire’s Rose Bowl ground at lunchtime, even though there was no chance of the contest getting under way, as scheduled, at 2pm.

A forecast for better weather later in the day offered hope of at least some entertainment, although a game shortened from 50 overs a side to something nearer the minimum of 20/20 seemed to be the best possibility.
