Former Sri Lanka all-rounder Chaminda Vaas has re-signed as Northamptonshire’s overseas player for next season.
Vaas was originally signed as a one-day specialist last season but made such a favourable impression in his brief stint at Wantage Road that he was brought back to play in all cricket this year.
He has responded by taking 65 wickets in Northamptonshire’s push for County Championship promotion and has also contributed valuable lower order runs.
“I’m very happy and I’m looking forward to another season with Northants. I feel I’ve done really well and I can’t wait for another brilliant season next year. I’ll continue to give 100 per cent for the team,” Vaas said.
“From the outset we had a clear plan to get promotion, and so far the team has played brilliantly. All the lads are confident and I’m looking forward to helping the team get promoted to Division One of the County Championship.”
Having recently also re-signed wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien and all-rounder David Willey on extended contracts, Northamptonshire head coach David Capel is delighted to have retained Vaas.
“It’s very pleasing news,” Capel said. “If you look at the stats, 65-plus wickets at 21, bowling a lot of line and length and moving the ball around, he has done a great job for us this year. It’s fantastic that he wants to be with us and continue the excellent relationship we have with him.”
