Mitchell aims for Worcestershire return in Twenty20 Cup

Worcestershire captain Daryl Mitchell will attempt to prove his fitness ahead of Friday’s Friends Life t20 opener against Lancashire at Old Trafford on June 3 by playing in a second team match this week.

Mitchell has been sidelined for most of May by a side strain which he suffered bowling in a Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Derbyshire at New Road but he has been pencilled in to return to action in the second team friendly against Cardiff MCCU at Bromsgrove which starts on June 2.

Seamer Matt Mason, who sustained a shoulder injury in the defeat by Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge last month, is also expected to make his return at Bromsgrove.

Worcestershire are still awaiting on visas for overseas players Shakib Al Hasan and Saeed Ajmal for their Twenty20 Cup campaign.

They expect Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib to receive his paperwork in time to face Lancashire but Pakistan off-spinner Ajmal may have to wait until next week for his county debut.

Ajmal is currently playing for Pakistan in their one-day mini-series in Ireland and will have to return home to collect his visa before returning to England to link up with Worcestershire.

Australian seamer Damien Wright, whose stint with Worcestershire was due to end with the current County Championship match against Nottinghamshire, will be kept on as cover until Ajmal arrives.
