Benning and Batty star for MCC in Namibia

County players past and present helped the MCC to open their tour of Nambia with a crushing 94-run win over a Coastal Invitation XI at the Sparta club in Walvis Bay.

James Benning, the former Surrey all-rounder who was released by Leicestershire at the end of last season, top scored with an unbeaten 43 from 69 balls in the MCC’s 207 for five in their 50 overs.

Gloucestershire wicketkeeper Jon Batty helped to give the innings a flying start with a quickfire 35 in an opening stand of 77 with David Snellgrove, who plays for the Bootle club on Merseyside.

Warwickshire batsman Darren Maddy, the MCC captain on this two-week trip, stabilised the tourists with a patient 25 after they had stuttered on a grassy pitch.

The MCC then made light of the Invitation XI’s batting, soon reducing them to 49 for four, with Hampshire seamer David Griffiths taking two for 17 in six overs and Sussex off-spinner Ollie Rayner taking two for 33 in three overs.

But Norfolk slow left-armer David Adams, brother of Surrey manager Chris, was the pick of the MCC’s bowling with three for 24 in 7.1 overs as the Coastal XI were dismissed for 113 in just 27.1 overs.
