Leicestershire batting prodigy Shiv Thakor was voted the Telesky Shopping Young Sports Personality (Male Under-18) at the 10th annual Lebara British Asian Sports Awards ceremony.
The talented 17-year-old, who will join Leicestershire on a three-year summer contract this season, beat off stiff competition for the title including Leicester City footballer Raajan Singh Gill and golfer Pavan Sagoo.
“I’m speechless. This is a huge honour for me to be named Young Sports Personality of the Year, especially with two other strong contenders also in the category,” Thakor said. “I’ve been really nervous throughout the voting process and to finally hear that I’ve actually won is unreal.
“This award will now push me to progress further and I can use it as a stepping stone to go on and represent my country on the global stage. I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me.”
Leicester-born Thakor has been on Leicestershire’s radar since he played for the county’s under-9 side as a six-year-old.
He has since played for every age group in the county’s successful youth system, usually above his own age group, and made a double-century for Loughborough GS against Nottingham HS in the National Under-13 Schools semi-finals.
He is now a pupil at Uppingham School and toured Sri Lanka with England Under-19s recently.
The judging panel included BASA ambassador and Surrey batsman Mark Ramprakash, Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis OBE and Leicester-born BBC Football League Show presenter, Manish Bhasin.
